Robert Thornton is principal consultant for Motivation Plus Consulting, a full-service training and development firm dedicated to helping their clients to explore, achieve, and maximize on organizational excellence. Mr. Thornton retired as Senior Program Officer from the Skillman Foundation in December 2018, after an eighteen-year career where he led four successful focus areas including Faith-Based Initiatives, Comprehensive Community Change (GNI) in four separate neighborhoods, Community Safety, and Boys and Men of Color work. Prior to joining the Foundation, he spent thirteen years at New Detroit Inc. in various leadership positions managing Community Economic Development, Consensus Building, Conflict Management, Race Relations, Youth Development, and Diversity and Equity. A highly effective community organizer, his true passion is demonstrated in his unwavering efforts on behalf of youth and the monumental challenges facing African American and Latino boys. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Oakland University, and his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Wayne State University. Mr. Thornton continues his community connection serving on several boards such as: Authority Health Inc., Black Educational Services Inc., National Black Child Development Inc., My Brother’s Keeper Detroit (R.E.A.L. Brothers), and Oakland University’s Black Alumni Chapter. Mr. Thornton is also an active member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Nu Omega Chapter, and volunteers with Midnight Golf, Inc. Mr. Thornton is a proud resident of the city of Detroit and serves faithfully as a Deacon at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church.
